LETTUCE PLANTING TECHNICAL GUIDANCE
Lettuce, belonging to the family Asteraceae and the genus Lettuce, is an annual herbaceous plant. It is crispy, tender and refreshing, and easy to eat raw. Lettuce prefers cold and cool climates. The optimal temperature for sprouting lettuce seeds is 15-20 ºC, and it prefers a loose and well ventilated substrate. The suitable pH is 6.0-6.9. The weight of a thousand seeds is 0.8-1.5g, with slight differences depending on the variety. Below is a brief introduction to the factory hole tray seedling cultivation technology for lettuce, for your reference.
1. Preparation of seedling substrate
The matrix can be purchased as loose and breathable commodity matrix, and can also be prepared in a 3:1:1 ratio of peat, vermiculite, and perlite. At the same time, 1.3kg of compound fertilizer or lettuce specific nutritional formula fertilizer can be added per cubic meter. The substrate needs to be disinfected with 100g carbendazim or 200g fipronil per cubic meter. The prepared matrix should be uniform and consistent, with appropriate humidity and a water holding capacity of around 65%. A standard 288 well seedling tray backup substrate of 2.8m per 1000 trays, and a backup substrate of 3.8m per 128 well seedling tray.
2. Preparation of acupoint plates
Selecting 288 well seedling trays for cultivating 2-leaf one heart seedlings; For 3-leaf one heart seedlings, a 200 hole hole tray can be selected, while for 4-leaf one heart seedlings, a 128 hole tray can be selected. Evenly load the substrate into the hole tray, scrape the surface flat, stack the hole tray filled with substrate in 4-5 layers, then stack a layer of hole tray, press the sowing hole, control the force, depth 0.6cm, and prevent uneven depth. Arrange the tray filled with substrate and pressed with seeding holes into the seedbed.
3. Seed selection and treatment
In the summer and autumn seasons, choose disease resistant varieties with strong heat resistance and heat resistance. Lettuce seeds are long and have many impurities, and need to be carefully selected, triggered, and pelletized to achieve a high germination rate.
The plumpness of selected lettuce seeds is positively correlated with their germination vitality. By selecting seeds with a high proportion of 95% and removing impurities, lettuce seeds with high purity, no impurities, and uniform seeds are obtained. In order to save seeds, the remaining 5% seeds with a smaller proportion can be collected and separately sown for management.
Inducing treatment: Soak lettuce in a 5% polyethylene glycol 8000 solution, stir well, and let it stand at 20 ºC for 16 hours. Then, remove the seeds, rinse them with clean water for 5-6 times, and air dry them for later use. This can break the thermal dormancy characteristic of lettuce with a significant decrease in germination rate under 30 ºC conditions, allowing it to germinate normally under high temperature conditions.
4. Sowing
The planting amount for lettuce is generally 25 grams per mu, and the seedling age of lettuce varies greatly depending on the season. Sowing in summer and autumn from April to September, the seedling age is generally 20-25 days, with three leaves and one heart; Sowing from October to March of the following year, the seedling age is generally 30 days, with 4 leaves per heart. The sowing period is calculated forward based on the planting date.
Lettuce seeds require light for germination, so the sowing depth should not exceed 0.5 cm, especially after being pelletized. The seeds themselves are already wrapped in a layer of pelletized powder, and sowing too deep can easily reduce the germination rate of the seeds. After sowing, cover with a thin layer of covering material. After watering, do not expose the seeds. The covering material is vermiculite: perlite=1:1. After the sowing and covering operation is completed, water the seedling tray thoroughly until water drips out from the bottom hole of the tray. Due to the water absorption of pelletized seeds and the scattering of their shells around the seeds, insufficient water can snatch up the water needed for seed germination. Therefore, during the seedling stage, the substrate should ensure a higher water content than conventional sowing, and the seedlings should be fully grown within 3-4 days.
5. Nursery bed management
Cave lettuce seedlings are prone to overgrowth, and attention should be paid to the management of water, temperature, light, and fertilizer.
Water management: Keep the substrate at 75% humidity, water appropriately, and control water moderately before the true leaves are released. The principle of water management after the true leaves are released is to water only when they are dry, water without penetration, and do not water early or late.
